The chase
It felt good to be out and about on this beautiful night. Normally I wouldn’t even dare to go walking in the dark, but tonight was different. The house felt stifling and constricting.
That is why I found myself walking outside on this crisp cool night. It was a good night to pick. There was not many people about so I was pretty much alone. All alone except for that man that was following me.
I turned left at the stop sign and saw the man following behind me do the same. He was wearing a long brown coat with his head bent at an awkward angle so that the shadows cast his face into darkness. No matter which way I went he was always there a moment later following behind me.
I saw a park to my right and figured I could lose him there since there were so many trees and equipment, so I turned towards it. He sped up a little so that the distance between us was smaller. I picked up my speed and ran for it. Inside the park I noticed a copse of trees. As fast as my feet would carry me, I made my way towards them and was rewarded with even more distance between us.
When I had made it to the trees he was only halfway across the park and I was able to find a bush to hide in. As I sat there I tried to track the strange man’s progress with my eyes but I kept losing sight of him. Eventually I lost him completely and couldn’t find him again. Hugging my legs I tried to get as small as I could in hopes that he wouldn’t see and leave.
I sat there curled in a ball, staring at the two entrances. If he left the park I would see him. So I waited… and waited… and waited...but I did not see anyone pass in or out of the gates. I was sure that he had not left before I started watching the entrances so that only meant one thing. He was somewhere in the park and I had no idea where that somewhere was.
The sound of a twig cracking behind me had me jumping up in fright and dashing towards the nearest means of escape. I was so scared I ran right through the wrong entrance and ended up in a field! Knowing I couldn’t turn around I just kept going, hoping with all my might that I would come across someone who could help me.
My legs were cramping and shaking so bad it was as though the ground were shaking from an earthquake, and my lungs were so deprived of oxygen it felt as though they were on fire. All this time we did not pass any homes or see any sign of life besides that of each other.
I had no idea what he was but I was almost certain he wasn’t human. The thing that was following me was much bigger than any man I had ever seen. He stood at least eight foot tall and was much more muscled than a body builder. Boy was this guy in shape. He had been chasing me for what felt like ever and showed no signs of exhaustion, even though I felt like I was going to pass out. It looked like he wasn’t even pushing himself!
It was like the guy was teasing me. Every time I slowed down so did he and every time I sped up he did the same. What was wrong with this guy!
Up ahead was a few trees with some bushes underneath it. I would barely be able to wriggle through it so I knew my pursuer would get caught for at least a moment. I ran straight towards them and squeezed through. When I was a safe distance away I looked back and saw that I was right. He had gotten stuck and had just now gotten out of the bushes.
The figure was a few yards back when I noticed another small copse of trees a little ways ahead. If I could make it I could easily hide until he passed me then run the other way. Pushing myself to the limit I saw my chance and took it. I dove into the bushes AND WENT RIGHT INTO A HOLE!
There was nothing to grab onto and the sides of the hole where so slick my hands just slid down them. I just kept falling and falling until suddenly…
I sat straight up in bed. Hurriedly I flipped on the lamp on my bedside table. Scanning the room. I saw no signs of the figure that had been chasing me all night. Laying back in bed I willed my racing heart to slow. It was only a dream.
