The state of Arkansas has decided to not allow “junk food” vending machines into the schools. I can understand why they did it but I must strongly disagree otherwise. Many kids do not like the school lunches but do not want to go to the vending machines because of the unsatisfactory options, at least with the less healthier vending machines the student will be eating something and not going hungry. Plus, if a kid really wants say a bag of cheez-its they can just go to the store or something after school to get some. If adults are that worried about kids eating unhealthy foods they can put moderately healthy but still yummy foods into the vending machines.
At least half the students in the high school tend to either bring their lunch or skip lunch because they either do not like cafeteria food or do not like what they are cooking that day. This is not healthy for the student especially if they have athletics. They could get dizzy, lightheaded, have stomach aches, or even pass out. If we had vending machines with a somewhat appealing selection of snacks at least they would have something in their stomach. While those kinds of foods are not healthy to eat all the time it would not hurt to eat them every now and then.
Also, if a kid really want a certain snack they could just go to the store to buy it or even bring it to school. Why not make some money off of the snacks if the kids are going to get them anyways. That way everyone is happy!
The supposedly “junk foods” we eat really aren’t that bad if you don’t eat them constantly and if people are so worried about us eating unhealthy food they could put appetizing healthier foods in it. Food like granola bars, crackers, cookies, etc.. They don’t have to put super unhealthy food in them but they needn’t put unappetizing food in them that nobody will eat either. That is a waste of money and food.
Growing kids love snacks so why deny them a good snack they will enjoy. If you put juice and some kind of chips or crackers in the vending machines they will make a pretty good snack that is fairly healthy. Everyone needs a snack now and then so at least make it a scrumptious snack that they will enjoy.
